The Taklung Kagyu represents one of the four major schools of the Kagyu tradition, tracing its lineage directly back to the Buddha through an unbroken chain of realized masters. Each lineage holder has preserved and transmitted the essential teachings with complete authenticity.
Born in Dho Kham Yangshoed Bongra, he received profound teachings from Phagmo Drupa and established our monastery in 1180. Known for his exceptional realization and strict adherence to Vinaya discipline, he attracted thousands of disciples during his lifetime.
A direct disciple of the founder, he continued the tradition with great wisdom and compassion. Under his guidance, the monastery flourished and the teachings were systematically preserved and transmitted to the next generation.
Renowned for his scholarly achievements and meditative realization, he composed numerous texts that remain authoritative guides for practitioners. His teachings on Mahamudra are particularly revered within our tradition.
He established Riwoche Monastery in Kham in 1276, creating the second major seat of our tradition. This expansion was crucial for preserving and spreading the Taklung Kagyu teachings across Tibet.
Born in Bhutan, His Holiness continues the precious lineage in exile. Under his guidance, new centers have been established worldwide, ensuring the survival and flourishing of our tradition for future generations. He embodies the perfect balance of traditional wisdom and modern adaptation.
"Through the unbroken lineage from Buddha Vajradhara to our present teachers, the blessings and wisdom of countless realized masters flow to benefit all sentient beings. May this precious transmission continue until samsara is empty."
Founded in 1180 by Taklung Thangpa Tashi Pal, we are one of the four chief schools of the Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. Our mission is to preserve and transmit the precious dharma teachings for the benefit of all sentient beings.
"May all beings be free from suffering and the causes of suffering. May all beings find happiness and the causes of happiness."
