Taklung Monastery stands as one of the most significant monasteries in the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. Located 120 kilometers north of Lhasa in the Pak-chu Valley, this sacred site has been a beacon of spiritual learning and practice for over eight centuries.
The monastery was established on a site previously blessed by the great Kadampa lama Potowa Rinchen Sel, a disciple of Dromton, who was Atisha's chief disciple. This connection to the early masters of Tibetan Buddhism imbues our location with special significance and spiritual power.
The main temple, known as the Tsuklakhang (the Jokhang of Taklung), was completed in 1228 and serves as the spiritual heart of our complex. At its peak, this sprawling monastic community housed up to 7,000 monks, making it one of Tibet's largest and most influential monasteries.
Tibetan Heritage
Our original monastery in Tibet represents centuries of accumulated wisdom, artistic achievement, and spiritual dedication. Though we now operate in exile, we maintain strong connections to our ancestral home.
Living Tradition
Under His Holiness Taklung Matul Rinpoche's guidance, born in Bhutan, we continue to adapt ancient teachings to contemporary needs while preserving their authentic essence.
Educational Mission
We maintain extensive libraries, teaching programs, and retreat facilities to ensure the continuation of Buddhist scholarship and practice for future generations.
Our Mission Today
To preserve and transmit the precious teachings of the Taklung Kagyu lineage, providing authentic spiritual guidance while adapting to the needs of contemporary practitioners worldwide. We strive to maintain the purity of our tradition while making it accessible to modern seekers.
Founded in 1180 by Taklung Thangpa Tashi Pal, we are one of the four chief schools of the Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. Our mission is to preserve and transmit the precious dharma teachings for the benefit of all sentient beings.
"May all beings be free from suffering and the causes of suffering. May all beings find happiness and the causes of happiness."
