The Origin of Kagyu Lineage
Taklung Thangpa Tashi Pal

Origin of the Kagyu lineage, according to the general view, Kagyupa means the one who holds and transmits the three precious buckets of teachings by the great lord Buddha through discourse and meditation. It also refers to the one who transmits the teachings of the chief yogi Tilopa(one who received all his teachings directly from vajradhara) as per unique view. And those who transmit the great stream of profound thoughts in which the advisory rivers of four teachers combined are also known as the great kagyupa.

The most glorious Taklung Thangpa Tashi Pal was born in Dho Kham Yangshoed Bongra (present known as Gojho under Chamdoo District) in the year 1142.

He studied writing and reading at the age of seven or eight and he was well versed in both. In the year 1159, at the age of eighteen he took vow from the guru named Gatoen Sherab Dorji, who bestowed him with the name Tashi Pal. In the year 1165 when he was twenty-four years old he went to meet Phagmo Druba (one of the chief masters of the Kagyu Lineage) where he received numerous teachings.

A brief introduction of taklung (dhopa) rinpoche

Taklung Rinpoche was born in Bhutan on the 15th day of the 4th month (Tibetan calendar) with numerous auspicious signs, such as the sudden appearance of three natural springs where the color of the water was milky, in front of the window of their house. His family lineage evolved from the famous lineage of Khochung Choeje – the lineage that evolved from Khendup Kunga Wangpo, the son of the Great Treasure Revealer Pema Lingpa, who evolved from the celestial lineage called the ‘Luminous Deity’.
